AP LITERATURE PRE-REQUISITE/SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENTS
2017-18
Revised 5/8/17

Pre-requisite/Summer Reading and Writing Assignments:

AP Literature Pre-requisite Reading is not an addendum to our curriculum, a hoop to jump through, or a ticket into the class.  The text selections are a part of the year’s curriculum and work.  There is simply not time during the year to accomplish all reading tasks we have planned.  Summer Reading allows us to begin our textual work immediately and to increase the amount of total reading we can do together throughout the year.

  • All pre-requisite work is due on the first day of school at the beginning of your AP class.
  • All work must be TYPED; each reading/writing assignment should be clearly labeled (no binders or folders).
Whole Class Readings:
àThe Grapes of Wrath by John Steinbeck
Assignment:  10 DE Notes--These must be distributed from throughout the entire novel—they can’t all be for the first 20 pages!!!

àHow to Read Literature like a Professor by Thomas Foster.
Assignment:  BLOG--2 blog posts (250 words) and 4 comments (100 words).  Your 2 posts will relate to prompts we create and post on the blog.  Due dates will also be posted on the blog.

Assignment:  Hamlet—-2 DE Notes for each Act; R & G are Dead—1 DE Note for each Act.

Individual Choice Reading:  Select one from the following titles.
Assignment:  Major Works Data Sheet for 1st Grading Quarter/Period.  You will need to have it read and annotated (annotations/notes to be checked) when you return to school.  You will use this text as your first Independent Reading Novel for Major Works Data Sheet (Assignment Sheet will be sent before school with other Introductory Documents as you begin to build and prepare your Portfolio.)  A Major Works Data Sheet is due at the end of each grading period.
